<image:title>Blog - The modern cuckoo, pushing diversity out of the nest - As many of you will know from my previous posts, I am a fan of our more enlightened past, which in many ways we are still catching up with - and I don’t just mean the spiritual aspects of the ancient lifestyle. At some point it will become apparent that our ancient relatives were as technologically capable, if not more so, than we are currently - many of you will want to stop reading round about now, because the concept is so ridiculous when everything we have been taught has been to the contrary. So, let’s get a few examples out of the way to have something of a more level playing field.</image:title>
<image:caption>Many of you will have come across the Antikythera mechanism, which was discovered in 1901 and is a device that has been dated back to 200-100BC. It consisted of a set of bronze and other metals used to make a system of gears whose purpose was imagined but impossible to determine with any sense of certainty at the time it was discovered. Using modern techniques, we now know this device was used to track and predict the movements of the sun, moon, planets and even eclipses using a complicated set of gears, now described as the worlds first computer. The Baghdad battery was discovered in 1930 and consists of a clay jar, a copper cylinder and an iron rod. If the copper cylinder is filled with a weak acid like vinegar or grape juice it generates a weak voltage. Whilst it is impressive that ancient cultures might be able to design and build modest batteries, more worrying is that we have no idea why they would have needed batteries around 250BC. Possible examples include metal plating for jewellery, however, this would imply a level of understanding in physics and chemistry that we don’t associate with ancient peoples. The carvings at Abydos and the Saqqara bird are both remnants from ancient Egyptian culture that do more than simply hint at the concept of aircraft and powered travel, going back as far as 2,000BC. Whilst I cannot deny the possibility that they could illustrate something similar but unrelated, a helicopter, a speed boat and a submarine are a little too coincidental and most likely would not have been understood as representations of such until the 1900s. A great example of ancient information not understood at the time of discovery. The amazing engineering capabilities of the Romans is highlighted by the durability and resilience of their concrete, which may sound like an unusual source for praise but hear me out. Roman concrete is so good, modern organizations/municipalities are looking to replicate it due to it being environmentally more sound and having a much longer lifespan - Roman concrete exposed to marine conditions has been found with practically no wear after 2,000 years..</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Enlightenment - Outside of my everyday life and hobbies, one area that has always fascinated me has been ancient cultures, because when you read the translations and motivations of ancient peoples, it highlights how similar we are and how little we as human beings have changed over the last few thousand years and maybe even further than that. We continue to struggle with certain aspects of what it is to be human, where did we come from and where will we go to. Why don’t we know about our past and how do we prepare for what comes after? I am not going to discuss religions here, what I will say is that it is the drive for someone to tell us that leads and keeps many people under different religious doctrines. Once you’ve read enough about these cultures, one area that tends to appear more often than not is the concept of enlightenment and it does so across all areas of life. So what is it? Well, there are actually several different aspects of this much used and poorly understood concept. In its simplest form, to enlighten means to bring light; or to give information to inform or instruct; to give spiritual or intellectual insight; to free from ignorance, false beliefs or prejudices. You could become enlightened about pretty much anything from a position of not knowing much about it. So is enlightenment the new found state of being after these changes? I am not so sure.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Look at the fringes….. - The dogma of modern disciplines illustrates that not only “history is written by the victors”.</image:title>
<image:caption>There were so many starting points for this weeks blog that I wasn’t really sure how to begin, so I’ll start with where my own personal journey started with my fascination of all things ancient Egyptian. As a much younger man I was intrigued by the highly colourful and hugely detailed artefacts that were associated with the great Egyptian Pharoahs, from the sarcophagus of Tutankhamun to the detailed drawing and depictions on the walls I once believed to have been in the pyramids. It was many years later that I realized that no Pharoah had been buried inside a pyramid and no pyramid had wall art associated with it. They were all buried under ground, in locations such as the valley of the kings. Most of the wall art you see are either associated with these burial centres or with the ancient temples that have survived. So if no one was buried in them and they weren’t decorated to indicate any kind of ceremonial use, what on earth were the pyramids built for? This started a rather long search for many answers about the ancient world, after all, as modern human beings we believe the ancients to be somewhat backwards in comparison - and this is the road down which so many of my early assumptions happily travelled, many of them not surviving the journey. If I couldn’t find the answers in Egypt, I thought I’d go even further back to understand where these ancient peoples were coming from. My next journey stop through the history books was Mesopotamia and the birth of documented human history. The Sumerians and Akkadians dominated this part of the ancient world, now described as the “fertile crescent” around 4,000BC - an even earlier primitive civilization.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Careers and jobs, which one are you looking for? - A career is not simply having a job - why aren’t we taught the difference?</image:title>
<image:caption>At some point, maybe by your second or even third proper job, you have to start asking yourself, is this really the job for me? And it is a really good question! The problem is, its actually quite hard to tell. By the time you start working in a “proper” job, and I mean a full time, standard hours/shift type job, a few things start to hit home. The education you had isn’t exactly tailored to a specific job, most of the skill sets you’ll need will have to be learned and that most work places have their own culture, something very different to what you’ve encountered previously. So how do you know if it is the right job? You’ll need to do a little research about your role, other people’s roles in the same company and about yourself. Every work environment needs different things from its employees - the basics are hard work and dedication, a willingness to learn, the ability to receive and act on feedback (especially the uncomfortable kind), being able to prioritise what your team needs, sometimes ahead of what you want.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Times of change - What on earth is going on?</image:title>
<image:caption>The news at the moment is so chaotic, another Covid-19 lockdown (v3.0), the challenges of Brexit, businesses closing and only a minority of others succeeding through the stressful times we live in. There doesn’t seem to be a great deal of good news anywhere. Having grown up in the 70s and 80s, we had a rough mix of stock market crashes, fears over nuclear war between the USSR and the USA, little tolerance of self expression, not to mention the peak of the AIDS pandemic. Even after all that, everyone looks back nostalgically at how culturally rich the 80s were, especially if you like big hair, dungarees, long coats and heavy make-up! I can’t remember a time when fear was so actively propagated by the media and broadcast so consistently across the globe. Fear has gone viral, literally. The current reason for this is clear, to drive people to follow restrictions the government deems necessary to combat the Covid-19 pandemic. The problem with this approach is that fear and stress have their own negative impact on health. From an evolutionary perspective, activating these systems was a response designed to minimize the energy put into maintenance of our body and our immunity, to ensure the energy could be redirected to help us evade an immediate threat. This role for fear and stress as a survival reaction is not as relevant today and I don’t imagine many of us are spending our time trying not to be caught and eaten! Living in an environment of fear and stress has the same impact on us, releases the same stress hormones and downregulates those same systems that we need for long term health, a robust immune system and maintenance of our body. This is why people with very stressful jobs are more likely to have poor health if that stress is not managed properly. This makes it hugely important that we all find ways to manage the stress inducing messaging we are receiving from the media. I don’t just hold governments responsible for this, our religious institutions need to take a long hard look at themselves too. As human beings we are not designed to live under high, continual stress - at the moment our leaders are not taking responsibility for the messaging being delivered and so we have to. Fear should never be the force that drives us to action, it belittles the spirit, stifles the journey of self discovery and limits our view of the endless, amazing possibilities that life holds. We all have more time on our hands than we are used to, take that time to invest in yourself in whatever shape that may be.</image:caption>
